The term "Hero’s Chest" for the front side of BMW Boxer engines originated during the era of the legendary two-valve Boxers among connoisseurs. This tongue-in-cheek term has remained, even though the "chest" of the two-valve engines appears modest compared to the truly impressive "chest" of the BMW R 1300 series today. Times have certainly changed.

What hasn’t changed, however, is that the front wheels still subject Boxer engines to spray water, splashes, stone impacts—especially on black engines—and dirt. Off-road conditions exacerbate this even more than on the road. That’s why we’ve developed a protective shield for the proverbial Hero’s Chest for the engine housing of the BMW R 1300 models.
